Mayor gives cyclists send-off as they depart for Paris

boris-johnson-011The Mayor of London, Boris Johnson recently lent his support to The Royal British Legion’s Pedal to Paris charity ride. The team of 250 set off from Greenwich Park on the four day ride to the French capital.

The Mayor was on hand in central London with two of the faster riders to wish them well on their journey before they set-off through London and the Kent countryside and on to Dover and arrive safely under the Arc de Triomphe on the afternoon of the fourth day.

The Pedal to Paris ride is now in its fourteenth year and has three speed groups to cater for riders of all abilities. It’s an ideal opportunity for any cycling enthusiast to get on their bike in the name of charity.

Speaking of those taking part, the Mayor said; “The work of The Royal British Legion in caring and campaigning for serving and ex-service men and women is truly outstanding. All those taking part in the Pedal to Paris charity ride should be heartily congratulated as they saddle up and embark on a tremendous expedition for the most worthy of causes.

“Their considerable fundraising efforts will enable the organisation to continue delivering essential services for those who put themselves on the line for all of us.”

pedal-to-paris-1Russell Thompson OBE, Director of National Events & Fundraising at The Royal British Legion said: “Pedal to Paris always has a fantastic atmosphere and it will be a great boost for the riders to have the support of the Mayor as they set out on this testing journey. The ride is a perfect opportunity for riders to challenge themselves whilst still raising money for an important cause.”

Covering 280 miles from London to Paris, The Royal British Legion event has a well-established reputation as the best organised of any of the charity rides between the two capitals. The 2009 ride will feature the same standards of service and logistical support including full rolling road closures, comprehensive technical support and sports therapist services.

The Pedal to Paris ride is also the only charity ride in which cyclists arrive at the Arc de Triomphe under full police escort similar to that of Tour de France, and for many it’s the real highlight.

The Royal British Legion safeguards the welfare, interests and memory of serving and ex-Service people and their families and dependants. All funds raised by the Pedal to Paris event will be put towards this cause.
