Now a fourth generation business, the company has been around longer than any other sports retailer in Scotland, and most sports retailers in the world. There are 3 stores in Glasgow, 2 operating as Greaves plus a Nike Shop in Buchanan Galleries, Glasgow’s leading shopping centre. The most impressive is the recently refreshed Scottish Rugby at Murrayfield. Greaves is the official retail partners of Scottish Rugby.
The retail refit at Murrayfield was part of a massive investment from Scottish Rugby to improve facilities for players and fans alike. Owner Sandy Greaves has had a long standing relationship with leading retail designers, Replan, which meant that there was only one company for the job. The initial brief was to bring the existing space into line with a new vision for Scottish Rugby; however it became apparent that more floor space was needed to accommodate a growing demand for sports apparel.
Managing Director of Replan, Felix Eaton explains the process “We decided to completely redesign the face of Scottish Rugby; in order to increase in size from 1,600 sq ft to 3,700 sq ft we had to move out!” The store now takes pride of place flowing out into the middle of the concourse and has entrances at either side guiding the flow of traffic through the store. By increasing the square footage of the store, Replan was able to design specific areas for each of the clubs featured at Murrayfield.
The two fold expansion and redesign created Scotland’s biggest rugby store, and one of the biggest in the UK. The store reopened ahead of Scotland’s opening RBS 6 Nations clash with Wales in February and proved a great success. The huge increase in square footage has allowed the store to increase its Scotland team stock, to accommodate kit from other RBS 6 Nations and world rugby teams, and to include dedicated sections for Scotland’s two professional rugby teams, Glasgow Warriors and Edinburgh Rugby. The expansion also means the superstore has the flexibility to open its doors and stock and sell relevant items when Murrayfield hosts other sporting events.
The vision behind this was to create a rugby destination which is accessible to all, where parking is available (with the exception of match days) and where any parent, child or rugby enthusiast can buy everything from a Scotland or New Zealand shirt to a basic rugby ball or mouth guard.
“The challenge has always been to accommodate the huge volumes of people who attend Scotland internationals and with this significant investment and redesign we believe visitors will enjoy more space and a much easier flow of traffic around the store. It also gives us the flexibility to stock items ahead of other sporting and non-sporting events by splitting the store into sections which will really help us to maximise usage. We have had a long standing relationship with Replan, and completely trusted that their designs would meet our requirements.”
