Attracting a bigger and more diverse international end user and supplier community, the expo floor generated a real buzz, demonstrating encouraging signs for the industry and a positive outlook for 2010.
The promise of high quality business interaction combined with agenda-setting conferences and live demonstrations resulted in a rise in exhibitors from 61 in 2008 to 91 in 2009. The total number of visitors reached 3,000 from over 50 different countries all eager to participate in the two-days of the year when every major player from the OOH industry gathers together under one roof.
Renamed to reflect its engagement with the media, marketing and advertising communities, Screen Media Expo Europe co-hosted The DOOH Media Summit with Media Week, which certainly managed to magnetise the big outdoor media owners. Other focal points in the refined conference and learning programme for 2009 were joint venture conferences with Cleverdis, POPAI and The Screen, as well as additional seminars and workshops hosted by DigitalSignageToday.com and the Platt Retail Institute.
The collective line-up of influential industry luminaries was exceptional, offering visitors the chance to gain valuable market intelligence and practical advice to apply to their specific screen media projects.
A centre piece of the floor was the Digital Media Gallery, which returned again with an expanded selection of screens and digital media advertising campaigns in action. It also perfectly complemented the wide-ranging assortment of products and services showcased by exhibitors covering all areas of the digital signage value chain including, digital signage, media networks, kiosks, touch screens and interactive technologies.
Held at London Olympia’s National Hall, 7-8 April, Screen Media Expo Europe 2009 assumed a stronger and more complete look and feel to noticeably separate it from the crowd. Heavyweight sponsors included BroadSign, Daktronics, Grand Visual, LG, ProTouch, Samsung, Signagelive and SONY. Media supporters from across the world were also keen to get in on the action marking the show as a ‘not to be missed’ international event in the digital signage calendar.

• The DOOH Media Summit
The one-day conference hosted by Media Week provided an excellent platform for brands to share expertise and establish new industry standards for digital creative. Presenting companies included, CBS Outdoor, McCann Erickson, City AM, Hurrell Moseley Dawson & Grimmer, Alive, Cheil Worldwide (Samsung), IPM, Postar, Avanti Screenmedia, Grand Visual, Titan Outdoor, Ogilvy Advertising and Universal McCann.
• Digital Media in Retail (DMiR) Summit
Hosted by POPAIdigital, the two-day summit had some major retail players on board providing practical guidance and insight on commercial shortcuts and benchmarks, together with proven know-how to clarify today’s good practice and identify tomorrow’s best practice. Speakers included DecisionPoint Media Insights, ROI Team, Post Office & ABC Media, CatchTheEye, Meerhoven PLUS Supermarkt and Repsol.
• DOOH Technology Summit
The two-day summit, in association with Cleverdis, provided a unique knowledge sharing and networking opportunity for stakeholders in the future of the OOH digital media industry. The programme concentrated on benchmarking projects that work and how different solutions are best adapted to different situations. Top-industry veterans and project managers that presented at the summit included LP Media, Française des jeux (French Lottery), Infiniti Europe, Stadium Impact, Institute for Advanced Studies at Lancaster University, Meki, Sony Professional Solutions and BroadSign International.
• DOOH Investors Conference
This exclusive conference hosted by The Screen Forum presented the ideal opportunity for the OOH industry to network with senior figures from the investment community. The day offered analysis and practical advice, and featured a range of funders currently investing in DOOH propositions. The speaker programme included BroadSign Inc, Orthus Partners, Results International Group, Amadeus Capital, Silicon Valley Bank, Simply Media & Simply Ventures, and Skyline Capital.
• Who’s Watching? The latest on Digital Signage Metrics
DigitalSignageToday.com hosted a workshop to highlight what organisations like the Out-of-Home Video Advertising Bureau (OVAB) and DecisionPoint Media are doing to provide accountable metrics for advertisers, brands and ad agencies.
• Excellence in Banking: Driving a Successful Digital Signage Program
In this workshop, in association with the Platt Retail Institute, attendees learned the how’s and why’s associated with deploying digital signage in banks, as well as how to determine an ROI. A detailed review and insight into a hugely successful deployment at on Jyske Bank Denmark was also presented.
• The Digital Signage Expert Tour
Screen Media Expo Europe and Minicom Digital Signage offered a new, exciting free attraction to help visitors gain a complete overview of the complex world of digital signage and specific applications. Minicom experts guided participants through the show, stand by stand, presenting all digital signage components and elements, from content creation through to monitoring at the point of display.
• BroadSign Presentation Suite
In addition to sponsoring the show bar, BroadSign International hosted its own presentation suite where insights and analysis of the DOOH market where delivered from top experts in the industry. Speakers included Carthage MO, NEO Booking SA and OVAB Europe.
