Any groundsman can nominate the grounds professional of their choice for the coveted Groundsman’s Groundsman of the Year Award – which is sponsored by DLF Trifolium and open to everyone at every level in all areas of groundsmanship.
The online nominations – at www.iog.org – can be based on a multitude of factors, perhaps someone who has succeeded ‘against the odds’ in terms of producing a high class playing surface despite the weather or limited budget, or by a groundsman who has successfully applied pioneering technology(ies), great team work or exceptional management skills.
Shortlisted contenders will be voted upon online and the ‘people’s choice’ winner will be announced as part of the IOG Annual Industry Awards extravaganza at the Emirates Stadium, London, on 15 October 2009 as part of the IOG’s National Conference. The Awards – the first all-encompassing award programme for the industry – embrace four broad categories of entry covering Sport, Grass Roots, Young IOG and General.
“We appreciate the opportunity of putting something back into the industry by sponsoring this award,” says Derek Smith, DLF Trifolium’s Amenity Sales Manager. “This award is all about quality, and it is an opportunity for the most qualified people – the actual groundsmen – to vote and say who they think is doing the best job.
“We love the idea of groundsmen being able to shine a light on some of the industry’s unsung heroes as well as the country’s more recognised faces. I’m hoping to see a real mix in the final shortlist, and I’m really looking forward to presenting the award at the Emirates stadium.”
IOG Chief Executive, Geoff Webb, added: “Such an award is long overdue. Whilst there are various awards recognising groundsmen, which is great in itself, this award will be a peer nomination by those who work day in and day out providing such excellent facilities.”
